We believe in the worldwide (universal) Church, made up of all those who trust in Christ throughout every age, together as the Body of Christ. In the same way, we believe in local churches which are made up of believers who regularly meet together in different areas to worship, hear the Word of God, fellowship, witness, take communion and pray, amongst other activities. Every Christian should be a member of a local church.
Matthew 16:18
Ephesians 3:10
The Lord Jesus Christ, Head of the Church, established two ordinances for the Church to follow: Water Baptism and Communion.
We believe that baptism is the immersion of a person completely in water as a symbol of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. Only those who are born again, by putting their faith in Jesus Christ and repenting of their sins are qualified to be baptized in water. Baptism in water, by full immersion, is a direct commandment of our Lord. While it is not necessary for salvation, it is for all believers. This ordinance is an outward sign of an inward work. It symbolizes a believer's identification with Jesus in His death, burial and resurrection.
The ordinance of Communion is also a commandment of the Lord Jesus that must be received continually until His return. Only believers can share in this ceremony of love, commitment and faith. It is demonstrated using a cracker or piece of bread and a cup of juice: The bread speaks of His body, which was torn and broken for us. The cup speaks of His blood that was shed for us. Both elements witness the death of Jesus and the New Covenant believers now enjoy while prophetically declaring His return. Communion is to be celebrated often when believers gather together.
